Ontario has already put out several stars on the internet including Justin Bieber, the Fitforafeast girls and now Picnicface with Kyle Dooley and friends.



Justin Bieber has become a world famous performer with humble origins in Southern Ontario. Online video sharing sites are now just over 5 years old and some stars are rapidly commanding worldwide attention. In Oakville, we are fortunate to have such a great community with good schools and a supportive environment to nurture talented kids.



Kyle Dooley just graduated from Oakville Trafalgar High School and is already on the Comedy network through the fame he and friends garnered with their online videos.



Fitforafeast is another local born project featuring 12 year old Katrina and 13 year old Sloane as they inspire kids around the world to get fit, dance, eat well and live better lives. These dancers and gymnasts lead by example with a kid to kid solution against childhood obesity. They were also featured on YTV - The Zone, Mclean's Magazine and TV News. In the case of Oakville’s Kyle Dooley, you end up on television.

The Oakville Trafalgar High School graduate and his seven buddies became big hits in the online world with numerous comic videos. Catching the attention of TV executives, the team of eight has its own show titled Picnicface — the first season is currently airing on The Comedy Network.

The team includes Dooley, as well as members from Toronto, Vancouver, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland.

Crime Down in Halton - Peace Be Upon Halton Region for 2012!

Halton is safest... again

For the fourth year, Halton has been ranked the safest place to live in the GTA and the safest regional municipality in Canada — by Maclean’s magazine in its 2010 ranking of Canada’s most dangerous cities.

Prince George, B.C., once again received the title of Canada’s most crime-ridden city, followed by Victoria, B.C., Saskatoon, Sask., Red Deer, Alta., and Regina, Sask. — Caledon, Ont., was listed as the safest city in Canada.

Crowell said traffic safety — not in Maclean’s ranking — is an area he'd like to see improved in Halton.

“Although crime rates are going down across Canada, our overall crime rate in Halton was 54.7 per cent lower than the Canadian average,” said Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell,  explaining while police do play a role in preventing and deterring crime, crime rates can be influenced by many socio-economic factors. Oakville Dogs Getting Licensed for 2012

Drivers need licenses, boater need licenses and yes, Oakville dogs need to have a current license too! It's alot of reponsibility to be a dog, and every dog must have a license in the Town of Oakville.



Licenses on a dog help them quickly find their homes again if they are lost as the identification on the "dog tag" is sufficient to find the owner. Dogs may not intentionally run away, but temporarily get disoriented and lose their way.



Sure there are stories of the dog that found his way back to Toronto from Montreal, but in general, a lost dog that wanders the streets is a danger to drivers and others in the community and risks getting injured or struck by a vehicle.

Time to get dog licences

The Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) is reminding pet owners that now is the time to come in and renew their dog licences.

The Town of Oakville requires that all dogs be licensed, and sets the fees ($25 for a spayed/neutered dog, $50 for not), but the program is administered by the OMHS.

“We encourage people to have as many forms of identification as possible on their pets, but the one you legally have to have is a licence,” explained Dushko. “Dogs can’t tell us where they live, and their licence can speak for them.”

Mild Winter for Oakville 2011-2012

Environment Canada just released their 3 month prediction and the nice weather is to continue. If you are thinking about that backyard rink this year, you may want to hold off.

Even pedestrians in downtown Toronto aren't quite in the Christmas mood yet because there is no snow.

The forecast calls for more precipitation but warmer weather for the next 3 months.

Bring on the fake snow! Toronto ski hills are making their own snow, but having a hard time so far.

There could be days in December that reach 12 degrees even though the average daytime high may be -2C.

So hold off on that snowblower just yet. We will continue to monitor the new long-range forecasts for any variance in this latest projection.

Winter Weather Projections for 2011 - 2012 in Oakville

The Weather Network just released an updated long term winter forecast. Since it is a La Niña year, world weather will be uneven which means some parts will see worse average weather while others will benefit.

In the case of the G.T.A. it seems we can expect a bit milder of a winter based on this forecast with average precipitation.

The only issue could be more higher wind days. Hopefully nothing like we have just witnessed in Calgary!

GE Oakville Light Bulb Factory Demolished

General Electric Corp.'s consumer products division shut down the light bulb manufacturing plant in Oakville, Ont., with the loss of about 180 jobs in 2009. Now the demolition of the building has taken place with concern over handling mercury and asbestos found in the debris properly.



The plant made incandescent, fluorescent and halogen light bulbs and had employed 160 hourly production workers and over 20 salaried employees.



The reason for the closure was dwindling demand of the type of bulbs that were manufactured at the plant in favor of more energy-efficient lighting products which has led to global overcapacity for older light bulbs.

The market shift toward energy-efficient bulbs led to the 2009 announcement that General Electric Corp. (NYSE:GE) was closing GE Consumer & Industrial, an Oakville, Ontario manufacturing facility for incandescent, fluorescent and halogen light bulbs. The contract for the environmental abatement and selective demolition of the 300,000-square-foot facility, known locally as the Oakville Lamp Plant, was awarded to Quantum Murray LP (QMLP).

General Electric Corp. closed GE Consumer & Industrial, the Oakville, Ont. manufacturing plant for incandescent, fluorescent and halogen light bulbs. Environmental abatement and selective demolition of the 300,000-square-foot facility was awarded to Quantum Murray LP (QMLP).

The company began work with the hazardous materials portion of the contract, which involved removal of designated substances from the plant through a variety of methods, which included Type 1, Type 2 and Glovebagging asbestos removal procedures. The building was sealed as a precaution as workers removed asbestos insulation, transite asbestos cement, PCBs, mercury switches and other materials typical of buildings constructed over the history of the plant. The fire and resulting smoke damage was so extensive that Apple Annies is closed for renovations at least until the New Year. Damage was estimated at $250,000. The neighboring pets are all safe and had to be relocated during the fire damage repairs.

The notice went out in 2009 that the GE light bulb factory was closing down and along with it went about 150 local jobs. The reason was that with the popularity of new style light bulbs, there was less worldwide demand for the older type along with overproduction.

Last weekend the boys 14C Oakville soccer group won gold at the huge Ancaster soccer tournament.

They initially edged out Kitchener 2-1 and then went on to win the finals by beating the Welland Wizards in a 3-2 overtime win to reach gold.

The dancing duo of Katrina and Sloane based on Oakville has a growing international audience with 10 million plus youtube video views behind them already.

Fans worldwide are posting videos of them and thanking them for their helpful videos on dance, gymnastics, fitness, nutrition, healthy recipes and more.

One such video is by a girl in Norway:


Fitforafeast.com is their website where they share tips for kids, tweens and teens along with hundreds of videos and how-to videos for kids. Dancing and Cooking are two of their specialties.

Although their own town newspaper, The Oakville Beaver has shunned them because they are kids promoting health, fitness and nutrition because of a "conflict of interest with the paper's own promotional news magazine for families" - hardly impartial journalism, the worldwide press is indeed discovering the duo including a recent article in Canada's largest news magazine, Maclean's.

Usually a local paper helps promote their own, but nevertheless the duo is reaching beyond the borders of their own town to an embracing worldwide audience. Congrats to Fitforafeast! (and shame on you Oakville Beaver, wag wag wag)..
